You Must Excel in Math

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Joe Pagano You must excel in math for many reasons. Math by its very nature is a rigorous subject which conditions the mind to work more efficiently than it otherwise would. One of the reasons I teach my short-cut arithmetic techniques is so that people who learn them can exercise their brains regularly. Indeed such exercise not only stimulates the mind, but also helps keep your brain younger and less prone to degenerative diseases and decreased cognitive functioning. And there is no better brain stimulation than that obtained while you navigate within the mathematical disciplines, trying to work and solve problems of myriad levels of difficulty. Scientific research has shown that mental stimulation not only improves brain function but also fosters the growth of new neurons. In fact decreased mental function is not just the result of old age or disease but more likely the result of a persons lack of mental exercise. Just as physical exercise promotes well-being for the body and mind, mental exercise has a direct impact on cognitive functioning. From a purely empirical viewpoint, this aspect is not hard to fathom: one need only consider the effect that practice has on ones ability to play an instrument. Virtuosity comes from ones continual plodding of the instrument in question. From continual practice, the virtuoso is pushing the brain to learn a task that was previously unattainable. Similarly, by doing purely mental calisthenics, one is in effect forcing the brain to create new neural pathways as well as alternative routes along already connected neuronal passageways. To achieve such advantageous benefits, you need only do some mental arithmetic which requires some light mental strain. Try mastering any of my arithmetic techniques as laid out in my numerous articles or ebooks and performing these mental exercises regularly. And if you want your children to have huge advantages in life, teach these techniques to them and watch the positive benefits that resultnot only in their school work and grades but in their own self-perceptions as well. Remember, if you want to be healthy in mind and body, you must excel in math. Make Your Own Herbal Home Remedies

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Evelyn Lim You can make your own herbal home remedies pretty easily. Herbal home remedies are a great way to treat common ailments of your family members. Just imagine if you have on hand, totally natural remedies that can help with open cuts, runny noses, fever, insect bites and back pain. Instead of opening up your medicine cabinet ever so often, you can make use of herbal remedies that come right out of your kitchen or from your garden. Here are some tips to help you with making your own herbal home remedies: 1. The easiest way to derive benefits from herbs is through consuming a herbal tea infusion. Herbal tea infusions can be made within 5 minutes. Usually an infusion is made just like hot tea. Simply put the herb (or herbs) that you are working with into a pot that has a closed, tight-fitting lid. Then, pour hot water over the herbs and let them soak there for at least 10 minutes. You can then strain this by pouring it through a nylon sieve or a strainer into a coffee cup. The leftover infusion can be stored in a cool place so that you can heat it up again later. It is best to drink herbal infusions fresh. 2. Herbal home remedies can also be made in the form of a decoction. Here, the plants active ingredients have to be more vigorously extracted than with an infusion. These herbal remedies are made from a plants twigs, barks, roots and berries. In order to make a decoction you will need to mash the herbs and then simmer it in water for about an hour. Next, remove the bark, twigs, roots or berries with a strainer. This can be drunk either hot or cold. Decoctions must be always consumed fresh. 3. Herbal remedies in the form of tinctures, are more difficult to make than the other methods of preparation. Place the herb that you are working with in a large jar and cover it with a mixture of vodka or rum and water. Please ensure that this mixture contains at least 25% alcohol. Seal the jar and then store in a cool, dry place for 2 weeks. You will also need to shake the jar occasionally. After 2 weeks, press the mixture through a wine press and collect the tincture in a jug. Once you have all of the mixture, use a funnel to strain the liquid into a dark bottle for storage. 4. Lastly, you can consume herbal remedies in the form of syrups. You will first need to heat about 2 cups of a standard herbal infusion in a medium-sized saucepan. Add approximately 500 grams of sugar or honey and then stir this mixture until the sweetener has completely dissolved. Let the mixture sit and cool. Then, pour the syrup into a dark bottle, seal it with a cork stopper and store it in a cool, dry location. Do not omit the cork stopper as syrups ferment quickly. You can always get the advice of your local herbalist if you need more guidance in preparing your own herbal home remedies. It will also be great if you have a good knowledge about what herbs to use for treating the various ailments. Try out herbal home remedies as a natural and alternative way to being well and save yourself trips to the doctor! Evelyn Lim is the writer and publisher of a newsletter on herbal home remedies. Her free newsletter shares tips about what non drug remedies readers can use for their common ailments. A Few Daylily Facts: Makes Growing Daylilies A Snap!

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Linda McRae While daylilies “love” sun, they will also tolerate “part-shade”. The filtered shade of a tall pine tree works well. You may wish to plant the darker colored daylilies in filtered shade particularly in the hot south where the sun may tend to “fade” darker colors. Proliferations are those little “plants” you may find growing on the bloom scape. When the scape starts to turn brown below the proliferation, cut the scape above and below the proliferation and root. This will be a clone of the “mother” plant. All registered daylilies are “named”. Although, some “named” daylilies are not registered. Names are submitted when the daylily is registered, and passes review by the American Hemerocallis Society. If you can’t plant your new daylilies right away, don’t worry. Daylilies are hardy plants, just keep them out of the sun, mist with fresh water, and plant as soon as you can. Daylilies are easy to grow perennials which multiply each year. Dividing should be done when ever the “clump” gets too big as crowding will result in a decrease in the number of blooms. Dividing is usually necessary every 4-5 years. Some multiply faster, and need to be divided sooner. To ensure maximum bloom, make sure that your daylilies receive sufficient water in the spring while they are “making” the scapes and buds and while they are in bloom. General rule is 1 inch per week although soil conditions and use of raised beds will vary that amount. To achieve good growth and flowering, plant daylilies where they receive full sunlight for at least half of the day. Mulching daylilies aids in water retention during hot summer weather, maintains cooler soil temperatures, controls weeds and increases water penetration. Materials such as pine straw, pine bark, wood chips and decomposed leaves provide effective mulch. When daylilies are transplanted, water them routinely to encourage new growth and early establishment. Daylilies grow in a variety of soils ranging from light sandy types to heavy clays. Areas used for daylilies should be spaded or tilled deeply to improve physical condition. Tilling relieves compaction and underlying hardpans which impede drainage. Daylilies should not be planted in poorly drained soils. Daylilies are shipped “bare root”. The Daylily Barn digs your daylilies in the morning they are shipped. The plants are thoroughly washed, dipped in a fungicide, drip dried, individually wrapped in towels to absorb any moisture and boxed. If you are shipping daylilies, you should not wrap the daylilies in any material, such as plastic, that will not allow air to reach the plant. DOR, EV, and SEV designates whether foliage is dormant (DOR), which means dies back in the winter. EV means evergreen and SEV means semi-evergreen. Join the AHS- American Hemerocallis Society! Members receive “The Daylily Journal” which contains, in addition to some beautiful pictures, articles about growing and breeding daylilies and other related topics. Regional newsletters (usually two to four published annually) for the area in which you live. Members can join daylily “robins” where members can interact, either by “snail-mail”, or “e-mail”, on any number of daylily related topics. Attendance of National and Regional Conventions not only lets you discuss daylilies and gardens, meet some wonderful friends, but gives you an opportunity to tour some of the most beautiful gardens in the regions. Club has youth memberships also, youth members can win awards and scholarships. The Stout Silver Medal (SSM) is the highest honor to be bestowed upon a daylily. To be eligible for this award, a cultivar must have received the Award of Merit not less than three years previously and will remain eligible for three years. DIP (Diploid) or TET (Tetraploid) designates the number of chromosomes. Diploids have 11 pairs of chromosomes and tetraploids have 22 pair. Here’s some info on how to plant daylilies. Dig a hole, make a mound of dirt in the bottom of the hole, spread the roots over the mound, final planting depth should be no more than one inch above where the foliage and roots meet, fill in with dirt making sure there are no air pockets, water and watch them grow! Some growers also sprinkle some fertilizer on the mound before setting the root over the mound. As you may know, in the last few years a daylily disease - Puccinia hemerocallidis - or “rust” - has spread across this country, Canada and Australia. If you need information on rust, there are many sites that discuss daylily rust on the web including the American Hemerocallis Society web site. In addition, we will be glad to answer any questions you have. The Daylily Barn now maintains an active rust spray program and all daylilies will also be with dipped in a fungicide prior to shipment. Remember: There are no bad daylilies, even the ugly one’s are pretty! More information can be obtained by contacting a local club or the American Hemerocallis Society website. “See Ya In The Garden!” Welcome to The Daylily Barn! When we began our hobby in our flower beds with daylilies, who could imaginge just where this remarkable experience would lead us? The Daylily Barn began with a mere ten or fifteen daylilies, as of this current year 2005, we have 400 named cultivars and approximately 2000 seedlings to date. Always a springtime “kaleidoscope” of colors to brighten our days. A family operated farm specializing in modern daylilies available by mail order, located on three acres. Get Fantastic Deals on Catering for Your Wedding

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Mia LeCron When it comes to your catering services for your wedding, there are options to make it more affordable. Generally for larger receptions, catering companies will offer discounts on their own. Saving money on your food and drink can be very easy, but it really depends on how large your reception party will be and what you are planning to serve. I will explain how you can save some money on the catering for your party. 1. You can serve basic entrees where the meals are all inclusive and forego the extras like salads, soups and breads and bring these items yourself. 2. You can choose to go with appetizers instead of full entrees. Many catering companies will offer a variety of appetizers at a special cost. 3. Skip out on the extra services that many catering companies offer such as place settings or servers. 4. Avoid going to a professional caterer and opt instead to use a small restaurants catering services instead. 5. Picking up the food for your reception instead of letting the catering company deliver it can save you a great deal of money. 6. You can always make the food yourself and experiment with many different tastes or prepare all of your best dishes. 7. Tips are generally included in catering packages so you do not have to provide extra tips during the reception unless someone goes out of their way and/or far over the duties 8. Plan your wedding yourself instead of using a wedding planner 9. Limit your transportation costs by booking the services on off seasons or shopping around for the cheapest costs 10. The very last thing that you can do is elope! These tips can save you a lot of money on catering because when you skip the extras and forego the delivery charges and set up etc. catering companies will give you good prices. Of course, you can also opt out of full entrees and serve something altogether different. It can be very easy to get good prices on catering services. Perhaps the best way to do this is to simply limit the guests at your reception that you have to serve. By turning your full reception into a private and intimate celebration, you can limit the amount of guests without offending anyone. Unless you can afford to invite all of your co-workers that you get along with, dont invite any. It is just good etiquette. Are Promotional Items Right For Your Business?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Sara Chambers If you’re a small business owner, then you know how difficult advertising can be. The most difficult decision is what to spend the money allocated toward marketing and advertising on. Do you spend money on a billboard or spring for some radio airtime? If so what kind of station most represents your target audience, soft adult contemporary or urban R&B? Should you buy some on screen time on cable TV perhaps? Drop big bucks on an infomercial or even the internet? What kind of advertisement do you produce? The choices are numerous and making the right one can mean big profits for your company. One of the key questions a business owner must ask oneself is how can you get the most bang for your advertising buck? The answer to that question is increasingly becoming the use of promotional items. Promotional items range from customized ink pens and Frisbees to personalized coffee mugs and t-shirts. One of the chief benefits of promotional items is the ability to specifically target your audience. Does you business cater to young men and women between the age of 18 and 25? Then hand out Frisbees with your company’s logo on a college campus. Not only are you able to specify who you advertise to, but you can be assured that people will see your company’s name and logo frequently. The type of promotional product that you use will depend on your service. Are you a realtor? Consider small measuring tapes to hand out to people. But if you are a business that has products, the best promotional material you can possibly use is the product itself. Are you a small makeup company? The best promotional material you can use is sample products itself. Another benefit of using promotional products is branding. For small business owners, independent contractors, and realtors branding is essential to advertising and marketing. The business becomes the logo and the logo becomes the business. The realtor is the face that is on the business card or the letterhead. Branding is that force that keeps your face fresh in the minds of people. Miniature Painting - Layering Paint

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Lee Jerrum Layering is a basic technique for applying highlights to a model that are both more precise and cleaner looking than your basic drybrushing. While drybrushing certainly has its benefits, when applied to an entire model it gives the model a dirty look and is hard to control exactly where you want the paint to go. With layering, you decide where the highlights will be. Some basic things to remember before you go ahead and start painting them: 1) Determine both the starting colour and the final colour that you want to aim for.Don’t be upset if the final colour comes out a bit different however, that is normal. Choosing the colours you want to start and finish with will help with choosing highlight colours. 2) Determine where your light source is coming from. This sounds like a silly thing to worry about but it is actually very important. A model that is lit by noontime sun will be highlighted substantially different than one that is lit by the sun from behind at dusk. Personally, I like to do my layering as if lit by the sun from directly above as it is easier :) 3) Decide on just how many layers you want. For quicker painting on models you just want to look decent on the table, 2 is enough (not including the base colour) but for models that you REALLY want to look impressive, you are going to need far more. I tend to paint everything with at least 4+ layers but that is just me. For the Steel Blue 50/50 FolkArt Metallic Sequin Black/DecoArt Metallic Ice Blue3-4 layers of Metallic Ice Blue mixed with increasing amounts of Mithril Silver For the Gold Tin bitz base 50/50 Tin Bitz/Shining Gold Shining Gold 50/50 Shining Gold/Mithril Silver for the extreme highlights Cloth Vermin Brown 3-4 coats of vermin Brown with increasing amounts of Bleached Bone 50/50 Bleached Bone/Skull White Skull White (extreme highlights only. Will look fine without this step as well) The design on the tabbard is done in pure Ultramarines blue iirc Hoses and gun clip/basic metal parts Boltgun Metal Black Ink wash (no water added, straight Ink) Eyes FolkArt Lime Yellow 50/50 Lime Yellow/Skull White Gems Blood Red Blazing Orange Skull White (dot) Barbed Wire Vermin Brown base Boltgun Metal heavy drybrush coat. just shy of a wet coat actually In order to paint with layers, you simply start with a darker colour of what you want to end up with and add more and more of a lighter highlight colour to the mix in order to continue the progression from dark to light. Each time you go a step lighter you paint a smaller area within the previous one. Depending on how many coats you want to do and how smooth you wish the transition from dark to light to be, you can paint successive layers either very close to the outside edge of the previous colour or you can go smaller and leave a fair bit of the previous colour showing. Going fairly close to the edge of the last colour will result in a smoother looking blend of colours but takes a lot more layers than leaving a larger amount of the previous colour. However, leaving larger layers is perfect for tabletop quality minis and requires much less time. Seems like a ton of work but it really isn’t as more often than not, you are going to be adding just a bit more of the lighter colour and doing another coat immediately after the first so it goes fairly fast. I will use the steps for the Steel Blue as the basis for this article. In this case I use a 50/50 mix of Metallic Sequin Black/Metallic Ice Blue to achieve the initial colour. This is then painted on the entirety of the surfaces you wish to be the colour you are going for. Don’t be afraid to get paint on other surfaces at this point as you can simply clean up these ares with your black/white bascoat when you are done. Keeping the paint you have just used, add a small amount of Mithril Silver to the mix and paint the next stage in a slightly smaller area than the last coat. Repeat this step 3 or 4 more times, adding in more Mithril Silver as you go until you reach the desired effect. A good spot in the pic here to see the separate layers is on the loincloth. You can see the dark first layer and the next few layers within each other fairly clearly. This method can be applied to any mini with any colour and once you get the hang of it is extremely easy to do. Hopefully this will help anyone here who has been wondering just what layering is and how it is done.
