If not, you are missing out on a real treat and a terrific opportunity to help you lose and keep off those excess holiday pounds. By the way, it isnt a diet that you can readily plan on starting, but it is one that forces itself upon you quietly and suddenly. Tis the season to put on weight! If you got a flu shot this year, likely you wont get the flu. Unfortunately, that doesnt protect you from the dozens of flu-like illnesses roaming our planet at any given time. Now for a real treat: if you contract an illness that attacks your intestine, plan on being laid up for several days. Also plan on losing a bunch of pounds as even the thought of food will make you sick! Yes, like it or not you are on The Influenza Diet or one of its many cousins. Ride the diet for what it is worthdrink plenty of water, munch on a few saltine crackers, because other than that you wont be able to stomach anything else at least for several days. When your appetite returns, gradually resume eating and return to your pre-holiday good eating habits. If the urge to splurge comes upon you, think back to those days when your very bones ached, your stomach churned, and the porcelain throne was your frequent companion. What sucks is you could be talking to a great woman, then your mind suddenly goes blank and you can’t have anything to talk about. Once this happens, you can say goodbye to any chance you have to attract this woman. The good news is there is a way to completely CAPTIVATE her attention during a conversation. All you have to do is utilize the power of storytelling. It’s human nature to LOVE STORIES. Think about it There have been times when you’ve been completely captivated by a person because he or she was able to tell a really interesting story. And you can do the same! By telling her entertaining stories, with you as the central character, you’ll completely captivate her attention. In order to tell a good story you have to first think of different incidents and scenarios which a woman will find both interesting and entertaining. Then practice telling these stories around people. The important thing is to get to the point where you can tell this story as a reflex. Now you might think is you should use a different story every time you talk to a new woman. But that’s not what you should do If you have a good enough story, learn to tell it to every new woman you meet. Although you might know the story by heart, it’ll be entertaining to any new woman you’ve just met. This is especially true when you know the story cold. For instance one story I often use when I meet a woman is about the time I was running and almost got hit by Bruce Springsteen when he was driving his car. I craft the story in a humorous way with him giving me the finger and my reaction. Since this happened MANY years ago, I’ve had a lot of experience telling it and making it really entertaining. YOU can also entertain women with your stories. Just sit down and craft a bunch of interesting stories. The only requirement for these stories is to create ones which focus on you displaying masculine, yet funny characteristics. Keep working on these stories till you know them cold. Then practice telling them every time you meet a woman. I promise if you learn this technique, you can easily approach a woman and instantly captivate her attention. Be Different! Stand Out During the College Admissions Process

With all the hundreds, or even thousands, of students applying to the same school as you are, how can you make yourself memorable? Here are some tips for standing out in all the right ways: 1.Take AP/IB exams: Don’t just take the classes, take the tests. Even if your scores aren’t especially high, admissions officers will admire your initiative. 2.Learn Chinese or Arabic: If your school offers either one of these languages, see if you can take one all four years of high school. Admissions officers will appreciate that you’ve taken a language that’s not only rare for high school students to study, but also challenging to learn. 3.Take dual-enrollment courses: Check with your counselor to see if you can take classes at the local community college for high school and college credit either during the school day, after school, or over the summer. No admissions officer will be able to ignore the effort you’ve made. 4.Join National Honors Society: If your school has a chapter and you meet the GPA requirements, join! Colleges love to see your involvement in a renowned academic club. 5.Sign up for Calculus: Even if you hate math, but you’ve done well in previous math courses, consider taking Calculus because it proves to colleges that you are willing to challenge yourself. 6.Write a thoughtful essay: Don’t wait until the night before the deadline to write your essay. By Cathy Goodwin Over the years, I have identified two kinds of midlife career changers: Jumpers and Clingers. Jumpers thrive on energy, enthusiasm and improbable luck. The last three times they leaped, a net appeared. They see no reason why the next jump should be any different. Clingers thrive on careers that offer security, money and identity. When they outgrow their careers, or find themselves forced out, they feel lost. They can’t remember the last time they found themselves in this position. Coaching jumpers and clingers for career change Jumpers call a coach when they are ready to find a new mountain. Suggest a destination and they ask, “Where is it?” Often they’ve made another leap before the coach realizes what is going on. Clingers call a coach when they find themselves lost in the jungle. They ask, “How do I know if I’ve made the right decision?” and, “How can I find security?” They hold out a one-way ticket, asking, “How do I change to a round trip?” Jumpers have learned to accept that sinking-feeling-in-the-gut as they leap off the mountain. Climbers are not used to feeling edgy. They don’t want a roadmap; they want a hotel reservation, preferably chosen from a listing in the auto club directory. Career change lessons for jumpers and clingers Both Jumpers and Clingers face a new reality. Even the bravest Jumper can run out of luck. Choose the wrong mountain and the net never appears. And in the twenty-first century, Clingers must create their own security. Jumpers must stop at the edge of the mountain, before the point of no return. “Does this feel right?” they have to ask. “Should I look first this time, to see if the net really exists? Or maybe instead of leaping it’s time to climb down more carefully, one ledge at a time.” Clingers also have to ask, “Does this feel right?” Like Jumpers, they must look for safety nets. They learn to read maps and differentiate between dangerous potholes and afternoon shadows. And when they can’t get a guaranteed hotel reservation, they learn to make a contingency plan to avoid sleeping in the park. Jumpers learn to walk where they used to run. Clingers learn to walk where they used to ride. Most people will combine the qualities of jumpers and clingers, but you can save a lot of grief by knowing your prevailing style. Jumpers need guides who say, “Stop! Think!” Clingers need guides who motivate them to go. Over-motivated jumpers become daredevils; over-planned clingers lose momentum. Disasters and Victories Both jumpers and clingers can head for disaster. Jumpers leap into icy water or treacherous rocks. Clingers find their once-secure shelter has been blown over by a hurricane. Jumpers bring energy and daring to a new venture; clingers bring planning skills and a track record of past accomplishment. However, as an alternative to artificial sweeteners, there is one totally natural sugar-substitute readily available today which stands out above all the rest, and that product simply goes by the name of Stevia. For centuries, the native Americans of Paraguay and Brazil used a species of Stevia, Stevia rebaudiana which they called ka’a he’e (or “sweet herb”), as a sweetener in yerba mate and medicinal teas for treating conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, and heartburn. Stevia is a herb belonging to the daisy family, possessing zero calories, zero carbohydrates and a zero glycemic index. Fortunately Stevia has recently gained greater attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. It is also now available as a health food supplement in the USA and Europe. It was not until 1931 that French chemists isolated the glycosides that give Stevia its sweet taste. These extracts were named steviosides and rebaudiosides. These compounds are around 250-300 times sweeter than sucrose (in the form of ordinary table sugar). Stevia’s sweet taste has a slower onset but a longer duration than that of sugar. At high concentration it possesses a bitter and liquorice-like after-taste, which varies depending ipon which glycoside is consumed. As a sweetening agent Stevia has almost zero calories, in contrast to table sugar that possesses 4.5 calories per gram. Stevia does not significantly alter blood glucose, and so is attractive as a sweetener to diabetics and those on carbohydrate controlled diets. In the early 1970s, the Japanese began cultivating Stevia as an alternative to artificial sweeteners such as cyclamate and saccharin, suspected carcinogens. Stevia sweeteners have been produced commercially in Japan since 1977 and are widely used in food products, soft drinks, and for table use. Japan currently consumes more Stevia than any other country, accounting for about 40% of the sweetener market. Stevia is also able to perform a number of other beneficial tasks. For example, it has been shown that it may enhance moods and increase energy levels and mental alertness. The cosmetic industry also employs Stevia in many skin care products, where its topical application has been shown to reduce the appearance of skin blemishes. Calorie Reality—Eating Healthier but Still Gaining Weight

By John Fairchild Are you choosing healthier, more nutrient dense foods and discovering a few extra pounds? Organic, natural and “back to earth” foods are on the rise. Unfortunately, weight gain is too. According to the Center for Disease control, the average weight for men in 1960 was 166.3 pounds and the average weight for women was 140 pounds. In 2002 the average weight for men rose to 191 pounds and to164.3 pounds for women. If there has been an increasing effort to eat healthier, what seems to be the reason(s) for these statistics? Contradicting information on what is healthy and which weight loss philosophies work the best may be a contributing factor in weight gain. Low-Carb, high protein, glycemic index, blood type, acid-base, hormone, food-combinations, sugar busting, volumizing, metabolic, intuitive eating are all terms that you have come across in the media. What a head spinning flurry of words and philosophies. Where is one to turn? What works best? The truth is any one of these methods can work for weight loss. The question is— which one will work for you over the long run? Any diet that cuts back on calories will bring about slight weight loss. Keeping the weight off is a whole other episode. Remember, the body recognizes a calorie as a unit of energy no matter where that calorie might come from. People are smarter in changing their eating habits today and including more whole grains, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Try using nuts on salads, in sandwich fillings or eat out of the shell to keep the portion size under control. Remember to buy them raw and roast yourself to save on fat and added calories. Granola: Wow, talk about a knockout blow. One cup can supply somewhere in the neighborhood of 550 calories. The trick is to use a very small amount with your yogurt, as a dessert topping, in parfaits, or as part of a trail mix for those long fall hikes. Most granola cereals are high in fiber, protein and potassium and usually contain a high amount of fat. Choose lower fat versions like Quaker. Protein Bars: Decisions, decisions, decisions— look at all the brands on the shelves today. This highly marketed product is showing up everywhere in all shapes and sizes. The problem with this is the calorie, fat and sugar amount included. It may be wiser (for your waistline) to choose a good old Snicker’s bar at 280 calories instead of some whopping 420 calorie high protein “bulking” bar. There are also a lot of added ingredients in these bars like sugar alcohols and fractionated oils. Choose low-calorie, low fat bars that include five grams of fiber or more for a great filling snack. Dried Fruits: Dried means the water was extracted out of the product along with most of the vitamin C. The natural sugar is concentrated due to the dehydration status—this means you have to eat more to get a sufficient volume. Shelf life is increased and the flavor is more concentrated. Read the food label and ingredient list carefully for added ingredients. A small serving of dried bananas chips contains 218 calories and 14 grams of fat. The fat comes from the added coconut oil. That very small red box of raisins has 130 calories inside. Premium tropical pineapples contain140 calories for one-third cup and 16 grams of sugar (sugar is the second ingredient listed). Turning Your Hobby Into a Business

By Alan Reisch Most of us have a hobby that can consume us at times. We spend countless hours doing the things we love doing, and when we aren’t able to do these things, we are trying to figure out how to free more time for our passions. So the obvious question becomes, “Why not get paid for what we enjoy doing?” Unfortunately, it can be a frustrating transition from hobby to business, but it can be accomplished with a little perseveration and patience. The first thing to remember is to take your time. Even though you are anxious to start your business, it isn’t a good idea to speed through the process. Your hobby is something you enjoy doing, don’t make it a chore by trying to transform it overnight. Also, it is very difficult to accomplish your goals effectively if you start out too fast. Think of a shooting star, it is beautiful and spectacular, but it doesn’t last too long before it consumes itself. The best thing to do is to have a list of things that need to get done and diligently work on completing this list one by one. Secondly, do things the right way by getting the proper licenses and permits. If you don’t know what you need, check with the secretary of state, the county, or city in your jurisdiction. Why waste your most precious resource, time, trying to figure out ways around the system? Your time will be much better served by figuring out ways to improve your business. It may cost a few dollars to get setup properly, but it will cost you a lot more if “the powers that be” financially persuade you to change. Finally, have a plan. Even if you don’t write up a formal business plan, you should at least have set goals and how you intend on accomplishing these goals. I will give you an analogy: Let’s say you are going for a drive in an unfamiliar area in your brand new car. The car is loaded with all the latest gadgets intent on improving your comfort and convenience. However, when you pull up your navigation system you don’t have an address to put in. What are the chances of ending up at your destination? Sure, you may be able to ask others for help or wander around aimlessly until you happen upon your destination, but it won’t be very efficient. The point is, unless you have a clear plan or road map, you won’t be able to measure your progress. Worse yet, you might not be traveling in the right direction. In conclusion, I would like to remind you the reason we have a hobby is because we enjoy it. If transforming it to a business changes that, then maybe it is time to reevaluate the change itself. Also, only go as fast and as far as you want to. Not everyone wants the same thing, so adapt your course accordingly. Yet another reason to have a clear plan. As a final note, I would like to remind you to be creative. Even if you have a product to sell, you might earn a profit another way. For example, maybe you have a wealth of information to share. In this case you may want to start a website, provide quality information, and earn money from advertising. How you “cash in” on your hobby is limited only by your own imagination.
