Is a Career Change on Your Horizon?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Kathleen MacNaughton Making a career change is nothing new in today’s job market. I’ve heard it said that the average American changescareers at least once in his or her life. Long gone arethe days of working for the same company from the timeyou graduate high school or college until that magicalretirement day. You sure won’t find that kind of loyalty from companies to their workers these days, and it’s rare to find that kindof loyalty from the average worker as well. What withcompanies merging, downsizing, and moving their operationsoffshore, you’d be wise to plan for a career change somewhere along the line in your life. Of course, losing one job doesn’t automatically mean thatyou can never find another job in the same industry orcareer path. Hopefully, you will. But what if you can’tfind another job? Or what if you don’t really want to? Maybe you’re bored with what you’ve been doing, or you’vegone as far as you can in that career and you’re ready fornew challenges. Is it really possible to switch to a new career midstreamin your working life? The answer is a resounding yes! But you have to know how to go about it. It takes a bit of planning, thorough self-assessment, and perhaps additional training. When I tired of the grind in health administration as anurse, I spent about 2 years trying to figure out what elseI could do. Luckily, I was able to parlay a love and talentfor writing into a new career as a health writer. I did have to prove my ability to write–even though much of myjob responsibility in my previous healthcare administrationjob did involve writing. I was fortunate enough to be able to use networking and some lucky breaks to get into thecareer I wanted with a minimum of effort. My partner, Jim, has been a systems engineer for more than20 years, but graduated with a bachelors degree in math originally. When he began to search for a career changealternative, his path was not quite as clear as mine hadbeen. Finally, though, after spending quite a bit of timeon self-assessment, he honed in on his love for trainingand teaching. But you can’t just move into the field ofteaching with no experience or education. Fortunately, theshortage of qualified teachers–especially in certain highneeds areas–has led to the development of a number of “alternative path” programs for teaching. Jim has enrolledin just such an online program out of Montana State University and will be launching his new career later thisyear as a high school math teacher! So, the question is… once you’ve figured out what you want to do in your new career and you’ve gotten the training you need, how do you sell yourself to a newemployer? The first thing you want to consider is the format for yourresume. The traditional chronological resume format is notyour best choice for a career change. Instead, you want touse either a functional–or even better, combination–format. You can read more about the different types of resume formats here:http://www.powerful-sample-resume-formats.com/formats Second, you need to take a look at your transferable skills. That is, what current or past experience or skillsdo you possess (either from past jobs or in your personallife) that you could use in your new career? For example, one of my readers recently asked how hecould get into interior design without any previous jobexperience or training. I’m not sure you can get intothis field without any training, but if so, then Iadvised him to look at any design experience he’s had, perhaps with redecorating his own or a friend’s home. Ialso encouraged him to build a portfolio of his work, which can be a very effective way to get an employer’s attention. Thirdly, you have to be honest with yourself about whetheryou can really make a career change without adding to yourskills and credentials by getting some training in the newfield. There’s a lot to be said for the contacts you can make during such training too, that may help you networkwith people who can provide an entree into the new career. In summary, anyone can make a career change if they reallywant to. But to do so, you’ll need to know what related skills and experience you bring to the table. And you’llneed to know how to sell yourself to a prospective employer. Career change is inevitable… you can count onit! But make sure it’s on your terms by making a solidcareer change plan. Avoid Those Wrinkles With These Tips

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Jeanette Pollock Sure, everyone will get a wrinkle or two in their life. Of course, many people will get deep wrinkles that will completely change the way they look. If you want to avoid growing old and dont want to look like a wrinkled prune, you may want to take action now. Use these tips to help you avoid wrinkles before they even start appearing. Stop Smoking The best thing you can do for yourself if you smoke is to stop. Not only does smoking harm you lungs and the rest of your inner organs, it also has an effect on your skin. Those who smoke are more likely to get acne and wrinkles. You can see the effects of the smoking on the wrinkled old people who are still puffing away, despite their wrinkly face. Use Sunscreen Another thing you can do to avoid wrinkles is to choose not to tan naturally. You can still get a great tan with self tanner, but you should be careful not to get sun damage and always wear sunscreen. Even if it is not sunny, you should use a daily moisturizer that has sun protection built in. That way you dont have to ever worry about your face getting too wrinkled. Dont Squint Lastly, if you dont want those little wrinkles on the edges of your eye lids, be sure not to squint. Many people rarely wear sunglasses and spend their days in the sun squinting. This is horrible for the skin around your eyes and will lead to quick wrinkles. So be sure to use those sunglasses. Jeanette Pollock is a freelance author and website owner of skincare-101.com. Easy Steps To Become Migraine Headache Free

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Javier Fuller Migraine headache is what migraine headache does! It is difficult to describe it and most difficult to endure. To be frank for the duration of the headache, you lose interest in life. You feel as if you will never be able to recover from your pitiable condition. The attack of migraine destabilizes you. It shakes your bones and muscles. You experience extreme pain and pressure on one side of the head or over one eye. You experience nausea, feel like switching off all the lights, windows and door and remain in darkness. You wish to get relief from this headache somehow! Over the counter medications for migraine may or may not give you relief. But even with the relief they are never the permanent solution to this malady. Sometimes these medications may increase your problem. But if you go for the natural treatment they are more effective. They are certainly harmless without any fear of side effects. So migraine is a special type of disease that requires special attention. One of the very popular methods of natural treatment is Chiropractic adjustments or manipulation. This is reportedly a century-old practice that has shown good results. Over 80% of people who have tried Chiropractic practices have got relief from migraine headache. The treatment is safe and cost-effective. The second form of treatment is Biofeedback. This is again a safe method. It is a sort of training program for self treatment to control nervous system. This technique provides you the ability to control blood pressure, skin temperature and own heart rate. The pressure in the tense muscles is thus reduced. Dietary control is another important tool to control the migraine headache. Food allergies and sensitivities are one of the reasons for this peculiar type of headache. Foods that cause migraine headaches are basically the triggers of headache. You might experience the pain after taking certain food items such as alcohol, nuts, chocolate or cheese. So you need to be your own diet-master and evolve a personal foot chart. Eliminate those items consuming which you get problems. One major reason for migraine headache is pure stress. So you need to think about other pleasant ideas, do physical and breathing exercises or go for a brisk walk and ease your tension. Following the above discussed measures, you will soon find yourself migraine free. Newborn Baby Gifts

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Damian Sofsian Parents and caregivers often say that most of the gifts that they receive for their newborns cannot be used yet and are only fit to be used when their babies are a few months old already. Newborn baby gifts are probably hardest to find since newborns are very delicate and sensitive, they also have different needs from older babies. Newborn baby gifts which are thoughtful choices include baby blankets made from a variety of materials. Despite their higher costs, luxurious cashmere baby blankets lined with velvet chenille are popular newborn baby gifts. There are also baby blankets made from terry cloth which also works well as baby towels and are ideal newborn baby gifts. Baby blankets also come in a wide array of colors and prints which are vibrant and delightful. Even the costs of these blankets vary, ranging from cheap to exorbitant. Retailers may even customize these blankets with the baby’s name or monogram and his/her date of birth at minimal charges. Customized artwork is also a popular newborn gift and can be highly personalized. The originality and uniqueness of these gifts are highly regarded which makes them even more attractive to a lot of gift givers. Newborn baby gifts also include toys which offer years of enjoyment for the babies and the parents alike. Popular newborn toys as gifts include those that attach to the crib and offer a variety of sounds, lights and activities that come in brilliant colors. Rubber or cloth blocks which allow babies to learn and enjoy at such an early age are also popular newborn baby gifts. Brightly colored rattles are also a popular option. Do I Really Need To Lose Weight?

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By S. Wagner The question may sound like a silly one. You would think that determining whether or not an individual needs to lose weight would be a simple matter. Well, take a look at the number of thin people in this world who still feel that they are too fat. Unfortunately, we don’t always see ourselves as we really are. When that happens, it’s time to take an objective look at our bodies before going on some weight loss regimen. This article will give you a simple procedure to follow for determining whether or not you really need to lose weight. Hopefully, after reading it, you’ll be well informed enough to make one of the most important decisions of your life. Determining whether or not you really need to lose weight is actually a very simple process. Unfortunately, it’s not one that we can do on our own. The reason, as I stated up top, is that we don’t always see ourselves as we really are. So, we need to turn to good, hard, solid facts. And the only facts that matter when it comes to deciding on whether or not to lose weight are height, body type and age. The rest of if, wanting to fit into a size three or wanting to be a runway model, doesn’t matter. Your ideal weight has already been decided for you based on those three factors. The age factor mostly because as you get older your metabolism slows down. But for the most part, it’s height and body type. So just how do we determine what your correct weight is based on those factors? Well, fortunately, those things have already been figured out for you. There are charts for proper weight just about anywhere you turn on the Internet. Just pick out one of a thousand sites, plug in your height and body type, which is either small frame, average frame or large frame, and the chart will spit back what your ideal weight range is. The usual ranges are about ten pounds. So any weight within that range is considered normal. So, if you weight 145 pounds and your chart shows 135 to 145, even though you’re at the upper end of the scale, your weight is still within the acceptable range. Unfortunately, this is where most people run into trouble. They feel that they have to be at the lower end of the scale. This is not necessarily so. If you consult with your doctor, he’ll most likely tell you the same thing. You shouldn’t decide to go on a diet unless you are outside of the given range for your height and body type. So before you decide that you’re overweight, please get your correct weight and what your ideal weight should be. And do it at a doctor’s office. Most home scales aren’t worth a thing. A doctor’s scale will be accurate and give you the real facts. Maybe you do have to lose weight. Just be sure. Relationship Advice: The Me Approach or the We Approach

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Jeff Herring A husband and wife were doing a little redecorating and rearranging one weekend morning. They were having an especially hard time pushing a dresser through a hall way door. About to give out, he exclaimed, “As hard as we push I don’t think we’ll ever get this dresser out of the hallway!” To which his wife responded, “Out of the hallway!?! I’ve been trying to push it into the hallway!” Sound familiar? Feel familiar? Working together, or team work if you will, is such an important yet elusive part of marriage. What makes team work so elusive is our tendency to take the me approach to marriage. The Me Approach Always taking the me approach greatly undermines any connection with your partner. This is especially true if you are one of those folks who will try to do it their way no matter what. Here’s a few warning signals that the me approach has a hold on your relationship. *The two of you cannot seem to come to an agreement on almost anything. *You avoid discussing major and sometimes even minor issues. *You talk to many people until you can find someone that sees it your way and then use that as evidence with you spouse. *You find yourself doing things just like your family did and you don’t know why. *Each of you believe your way is not only the right way, it’s the only way. The Team Approach Many people are on a lonely road due to the “my way or the highway” approach. In marriage, instead of my way, you have got to work on creating “our way.” Here’s a few tips for creating the our way - team approach: *Remember that two heads are almost always better than one. Marriage couselor Dr. Gary Chapman says “two people that are committed to solving a problem will always find a solution.” *Remember that your partner has skills and abilities that you do not have. That’s just the way this marriage thing seems to be set up. Honor them and use them. By the way, the dictionary defineshonoring as “to hold in high regard, respect, or esteem.” *Always ask the AWIA question -AWIA stands for “Are We In Agreement?” *One the the factors that makes the team appraoch difficult is you sometimes haveto give up the right to be right. Easy for some, hard for others. Just remember that often in marriage you can be rightor you can be happy, but not both. *Very few of us marry someone with exactly the same style of doing things that we have. A key step in building a team approach is to “try on” the other person’s style every now and then. There is usually a lot to learn. * Successful team mates (marriage partners) have clear goals about their relationship. They have discussed and are in agreement over what each of them would like to not only get out of the relationship, but sometimes more importantly, what they are committed to giving. I’ll close with a story about a couple I’ll call Mr. Neat and Ms. Clean. Mr. Neat could bath in a shower full of soap scum and not mind at all as long as the towels and soap were neat and in their place. Ms. Clean can have piles and piles of stuff scattered everywhere, as long as the piles are clean. The point is that this couple can have either a very neat and clean home or a real mess on their hands, depending on their ability to work together as a team. The Truth About Your Metabolism for Weight Loss

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Craig Ballantyne Metabolism is a magic word when it comes to fat loss. That’s why just about every nutritional supplement and workout program claims that it will rev up your metabolism and help you burn fat. But the truth is, there isn’t any supplement that can boost your metabolism on an everyday basis. While supplement companies like to push, push, push the idea that caffeine and Green Tea extract can boost your metabolism, I can guarantee you that nobody is losing pounds of fat because of caffeine or Green Tea extract. And why not? Because your body gets used to them, quickly. So they might boost your metabolism once, but they won’t do much the next time you take them. Fortunately, all exercise programs will increase your metabolism and your calorie burning power. However, some programs are much, much better than others. In fact, research has shown that there are two specific ways to exercise that will burn more calories and more fat than all of the rest. And these two methods are rarely used by the general population. In fact, research has shown the exact number of repetitions per set that you should be doing if you want to increase the number of calories you burn outside of the gym. And studies have also shown the research-proven metabolism boosting exercises that you should have in your workout. And finally, research has shown a specific form of cardio to be superior to the popular, boring method of slow, steady cardio. The best ways to boost your metabolism: a) Small, frequent meals, high in protein b) Interval training, rather than slow cardio c) Resistance training using a weight that challenges you for 8 reps per set Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and writes for Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Oxygen magazines. His trademarked Turbulence Training fat loss workouts have been featured multiple times in Mens Fitness and Maximum Fitness magazines and all over the Internet, and have helped thousands of men and women around the world lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean in less than 45 minutes three times per week. From Playing Card to Business Card

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Geo W Smith Without the development of the printing press in 1445 the Renaissance may never have happened, and Johann Gutenberg the inventor certainly did not know he was sowing the seeds of the business card entrepreneurs bonanza we have today. What civilisation gained from Gutenbergs invention is incalculable. Visting Cards Visiting cards (also known as calling cards) first appeared in China in the 15th century, and the earliest European form of visiting cards appeared in France in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV Le Roi Soleil. They were normal playing cards on which visitors wrote their signatures, promissory notes and other messages. The cards were just a little smaller than the size of a mans hand. As time went by, these visiting cards further developed into greeting and other cards. The business card evolved from the Visiting card over time, but through its evolution its purpose remains the same. Trade Cards Trade cards, another early form of the Business card, existed in England around the same time. Trade cards were used as a form of advertising and sometimes contained a map directing potential customers to merchant stores, as there was no form of street numbering system at the time. Other printing materials, such as newspapers, has not yet caught on as a vehicle for business marketing, so the earliest Trade cards were printed and issued using a letterpress method. However, copperplate engraving became the most popular method of producing the cards by the 18th century, and up to the 19th century, Trade cards were printed using a single colour (monotone). But as businesses thrived throughout the Industrial Revolution, so did the production and distribution of Trade cards. Lithography Around 1830, lithography using several colours became an established method in Europe and was the primary method for printing cards. As printing techniques became increasingly advanced, Trade cards became more elaborate, with pictures and full colour designs. Since colour images were not widely available, these cards became collectors items, and as the hobby elevated, many tobacco companies put the sporting celebrities on one side and photos with text about their products on the reverse. This was the start of the modern day trading cards. Meanwhile, Visiting Cards arrived in Europe around the middle of the 1800s. Calling Cards arrived Visiting Cards, or Calling Cards as they became known, were essential to the 19th century middle classes. The initial letters on personal Visiting Calling Cards denote French words: p. f. congratulations (pour feliciter) p. r. expressing ones thanks (pour remercier) even if one is presented with flowers p. c. mourning expression (pour condolence) p. f. N. A Happy New Year (pour feliciter Nouvel An) p. p. c. meaning to take leave (pour prendre conge) p. p. if you want to be introduced to anybody, send your visiting card (pour presenter) Soon, the Business card evolved from a fusion of traditional trade cards and visiting cards. A distinction between business and visiting cards quickly developed with the ornate Visiting card serving social obligations only, whilst Business cards on the other hand, were used solely for promoting business. It was considered to be in very poor taste to use a Business card when making a social call. These days, the modern business card is used primarily for the purpose of promoting a business, but it also serves as a calling card. First Salesmans Business card Whilst Visiting Cards were at first the domain of the upper classes, and trade cards were made to advertise and promote particular firms, the salesman who did the footwork calling on prospective clients needed a means to exchange information in a simple, concise manner. To fill this void the Business card was introduced with address or telephone contact information in fancy printing and graphics. Today, the salesmans Business card takes on many forms, including custom die cut shapes and sizes, with glossy coatings and top quality photo graphics. Business Card Printers Turn to Plastic Known for their durability, plastic business cards were manufactured using a variety of plastic substrates, including but not limited to: Polystyrene, Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polycarbonate, Polyester and synthetic Papers. 20th century advances in printing technologies and synthetic materials made it possible to print liquid inks onto plastics. In addition to the wide range of commercial applications of this technology. Today in the 21st century the more adventurous entrepreneur Business card printer has developed an array of sophisticated products. These include Silk art board, single and double sided Business cards, quality labels, complimentary slips, letterheads for all industries in superior quality papers, and laminated single and double sided Postcards for all occasions. All of which can be designed on line and uploaded to your personal computer. A boon to the busy firm requiring special needs. For the rest of the world, the exchange of business cards has become common even for social introductions. Even today, some people still carry personal Business cards which contain only personal contact information and have no relation to their employer or business. A Guide to Secured Loans

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mike_Trusler]Mike Trusler The common form of a secured loan is that it is one set up with some form of security for the lender. If the borrower fails to repay the loan then the lender may take hold of the security and sell it to repay the loan. Much the same thing can occur with a mortgage which is sometimes called a home loan and is a kind of secured loan in that it is secured on your property. There could be many reasons why you may choose to take out a secured loan. One is that a secured loan is a suitable tool to allow you to raise a large amount of money. This could be used for debt consolidation, home improvements, and many more reasons. It could be that you have experienced difficulty getting an unsecured loan due to a poor credit history. Lenders can take a more lenient view when it comes to secured loans due to the security that you offer with the loan. This means that you could raise the money you require with a secured loan although you may have been declined recently or in the past for an unsecured loan. What are the qualifications for a secured loan? You do not have to own the deeds on your property or own your home outright in order to qualify for a secured loan. If you have a mortgage, and have built up or have equity in your property you could take out a secured loan. With a secured loan, you can borrow an amount from 5,000 upwards and you can use the money for any purpose. Another advantage of your secured loan is the payment terms available, these can be from 5 to 25 years. You need to fully discuss all the terms and conditions of the loan with your lender to ensure the payments term and the amount that you will be borrowing fully meet your circumstance and ensure you can fully meet the payments each month. Secured loans are normally at a lower rate, than their unsecured partner and will normally be allowed to be taken out over a longer term. Also a larger amount may be borrowed with your secured loan as you are offering the lender some security. If you do not keep up with repayments on a secured loan or mortgage on your property your home may be repossessed. There are many factors that can account for the interest rate that you will be charged on your secured loan. Some of these are the amount and term of the loan and the loan to value that the lender is taking into account, which is the difference between the total amount of loans secured on your property and the value of your property. They will also take your personal finance credit history into account. A factor to discuss with the lender when discussing your secured loan is a payment protection plan for your peace of mind as well as the lenders of your secured loan. This would save you having to worry about the monthly payments should you fall victim to, sickness, accident or redundancy. There are different types of plans available and the lender will supply you with these details on request. So what are the benefits of a secured loan? I would speculate the main benefit of a secured loan is that you can receive lower monthly repayments and can borrow a larger amount of money with a secured loan than you could with an unsecured loan. The amount of money that the lender will allow you to borrow is greater due to the security you are offering. There are some lenders in the market place that will allow you to borrow up to 125% of the value of the property with your secured loan. This is of course subject to the lenders terms and conditions and your credit status. For you to be able to take out a secured loan the lender would like you have been a homeowner for at least nine months or longer. You can take out a secured loan whether you are employed or self employed and even people who have pensions in place can still qualify for a secured loan subject to meeting the lenders terms and conditions. Your secured loan, as with any loan, may be redeemed early although the lender will charge you an early repayment or early redemption fee for paying off your secured loan. So in essence if you are looking to borrow a large amount of money, would like to take it out over a longer term, and would like to have payments that are affordable to you and you have equity in your home then you should consider a secured loan. Why Are There Different Diet Types?

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

By Simon Edwards Diet is a dreadful word for most of us because it will mean food deprivation. This is especially so for those who love to eat, hearing this word seems like asking them to commit suicide. However, the term diet is not what we know it to be, because the definition of the word diet is “the usual food and drink of a person” or “something that is used, enjoyed or provided regularly”. Having said this, nothing is dreadful in the word; in fact, it is something enjoyed as the dictionary tells us. Will this change our fear of the word diet? May be not but at least I will try and explain a little bit more about diet and dieting that we know it to be. Since I already mention that nothing should be dreadful about dieting, it may be worth it to note that there are different diet types because there are different body types. Aside from the body type that we grow in, there are body shapes we long to have. This is the reason why there are nutritionists and health care professionals who design the necessary food intake to give us the body shape we dream of having. It is true that there are different diet types that will deprive you of indulging to your favorite food, but if you want a particular body shape, you need to apply a little sacrifice in order to get it. This is why models and hunks learn to love dieting. Different diet types only become successful when complimented with exercise. This is because exercise will help speed up your metabolism. Your metabolism is the primary player in loosing weight. If you have slow metabolism, breaking down of food in your body will be slow. Thus, it will be very hard for you to loose weight. There are body types that has fast metabolism, especially the thin ones. They never need the diet that deprives them of food, they have a different diet type requirement, and they need the diet that will require them to eat more. There are different diet types that are popularly making waves like Atkins diet, south beach diet and so on and so forth. However, success of these different diet types still depends on the discipline of the person dieting. Even if you try all these different diet types but you refuse to exercise, you will never be successful in loosing weight. Exercise is very important in using diet for loosing weight. There are also different diet types that may help those who want to gain weight, but then again there are exercises necessary for the success of this diet. You need to consider metabolism, which is the major player in designing your body shape, thus it is always a requirement that before you try different diet types, you need to visit a health care professional. The health care professional will be the one to tell you, which among the different diet types will suit you and your desired body shape. Finally, I would like to reiterate that success of these different diet types only depends on the discipline of the person dieting. Exercise to induce fast metabolism is necessary. Oversleeping is also bad discipline for these different diet types. Programming your eating habit will also depend on the type of diet you are following. Root word for success in these different diet types is discipline. With discipline, you will get the body shape you want which ever among these different diet types you use.
